Weekend travel is not permitted for overweight-only loads. No movements 6:30 am to 9:00 am (or) 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Loads 13 feet-6 inches wide or over 14 feet high can go from Tuesday through Thursday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Connecticut is going on with its pilot program permitting some weekend travel. Weekend travel is permitted daylight to 12:00 noon Saturday and Sunday if the load does not exceed 12 feet wide, 13 feet-6 inches high, 80 feet long, or 120,000 lbs on five or more axles. The weekend should be mentioned while ordering the permit.

Connecticut (CT) Oversize/ Overweight  Permit Legal Dimensions:

Length:

  • 48 feet trailer

Note: 53 feet semi-trailer is just legal on Interstate and Designated Highways if the distance between the kingpin and the center of the back axle does not surpass 43 feet. (Kingpin setting doesn’t have any effect on a single piece Over Dimensions permit load but the 43 feet maximum does apply on a multiple piece load, even when the various pieces are legal size).

Note: You can be fined $750 if you have a 53 feet semi-trailer traveling without a permit and kingpin setting over 43 feet if you are traveling empty except if the return trip is displayed on your permit!

Overhang: A permit is expected on trailers 48 feet long & covers over 4 feet needs flagged for the day and lighted for the night.

Width: 8 feet-6 inches

Height: 13 feet-6 inches (Note: CT won’t give a license for over height for any kind of building.)

Weight: 80,000 Gross pounds

  • Single – 22,400pounds
  • Tandem – 36,000 pounds
  • Tridem – 42,500 pounds

Connecticut (CT) Oversize/ Overweight Routine Permit Limits:

Length: 130 feet

Width: 15 feet-11 inches

Weight:

  • Single – 22,500 pounds
  • Tandem – 45,000 pounds
  • Tridem – 67,500 pounds

Connecticut does not go strictly by axle weights. They will go as high as 25,000 pounds on a single, if given that the manufacturer’s rating is not surpassed and given that the gross is within the limits expressed above for 5, 6, or 7 axles.

Over 14 feet wide, 14 feet high or 120 feet long is viewed as a Super Load. Over 140,000 lbs require an engineer review.

Note: the greatest super load width in Massachusetts is 16 feet

Connecticut (CT) Oversize/ Overweight Escort Requirements (PILOT CARS):

Length:

Divided Highway

MISCELLANEOUS: On loads up to 14 feet wide, the blade can remain attached. If overweight and weight can be reduced by eliminating the blade, then the blade must be hauled separately. Connecticut does not issue permits for containers. Connecticut won’t issue a permit of over height on any type of building.
